Since our beginning harvest in 2014, McKahn Family Cellars has worked with two different vineyards located in the Napa Valley. Our Syrah, from the 2014 & 2015 vintages, come from Ballentine Vineyards in St. Helena. Betty’s Vineyard, which was specifically planted to Syrah, is on the site of Ballentine Vineyard’s Napa Valley winery, bordering Highway 29. It lies just North of St. Helena in the heart of the St. Helena appellation. It is the gateway to the the warmer climate of the Calistoga appellation. The soil is Bale clay with moderate drainage, producing expressive wines with and soft textures.
The 2016 & 2017 vintages were acquired from Spring Mountain Vineyard. Spring Mountain Vineyard is an 845 acre estate on the eastern slopes and lower half of Spring Mountain. It extends from 400 feet above sea level to about 1450 feet at the top of the property. There are about 135 different vineyard blocks scattered over the estate totaling 226 acres. Each has a different elevation, soil, and exposure to the elements and each block produces something unique. This great diversity of steep hillside plantings is the source of consistent, powerful, and distinctive red wines.
